THE LEGAL POSITION OF THE SAIMC

The SAIMC NPC is a Voluntary Association of the Engineering Council of South Africa that sought recognition under section 36(1) of the Engineering Profession Act, 2000 (Act 46 of 2000) and was subsequently recognized by the Council pursuant to Section 25(3) of the aforementioned Act.

One of the advantages of this recognition is that registered members of a Recognised Voluntary Association are entitled to a partial exemption from the payment of their annual fees to the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).

CRITERIA AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF A VOLUNTARY ASSOCIATION

To qualify as a Voluntary Association with the ECSA, several criteria must be met, including:

  • The Voluntary Association must include, among its core missions, the promotion of the engineering profession.
  • The association must formally declare its commitment to promoting registration with the Council among its members and must endeavor to secure a commitment from its members to register with the Council.

Furthermore, the Voluntary Associations must commit to:

  • Supporting and cooperating with the Council in all matters related to the execution of its legislative mandate, vision, strategy, performance plans, and transformation agenda.
  • Implementing the Council’s Resolutions as required for the fulfillment of the Council’s functions or mandate.
  • Recognizing the Council as the sole Regulator and representative of the organized engineering profession on all cross-cutting engineering-related matters both nationally and internationally.

The SAIMC drives the recognition of Automation, Instrumentation, Mechatronics and Computer Engineering as enablers for effective and efficient application of new technologies.

The SAIMC, a Voluntary Association of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and enforces a strict code of conduct based on that of ECSA.

How SAIMC carries out its Responsibilties towards ECSA, its Members and Industry

  • Our Focus. We are the body of knowedge for automation and automation technologies, supporting the ECSA, education, industry and individuals to make effective and efficient use of automation related technologies and  algorythms. The SAIMC is driving the recognition of Automation, Instrumentation, Mechatronics and Computer Engineering as enablers for effective and efficient application of new technologies.
  • Our Members. Our members comprise individuals, companies, original equipment manufacturers, education institutions, engineering practitioners across all levels, ranging from artisans to engineers, who specialize in the field of automation.
  • Our Technologies. Our technologies include disciplines such as computer engineering and mechatronics, as well as various forms of automation like factory automation and process automation. Our expertise span all levels of the ISA95 model, from sensor installation and calibration to ERP integration.
